How Whistler community dealt with affordability crisis
Victoria decision makers and housing providers will have a chance to hear how Whistler residents met the challenge of housing affordability during a special breakfast presentation on Thursday, October 26 at the Ambrosia Centre.
Featured speaker will be Councilor Tom Wake from the Resort Municipality of Whistler.
"What began with an accommodation problem for just our service sector employees eventually turned into a major housing crisis for the community as a whole,? Wake said in a pre-talk interview.
“During the 1990’s, outside demand by visitors and second-home owners drove up the market price for home ownership and local residents and employees were priced out of their own community.?
The Whistler Housing Authority, formed to study the problem and make recommendations to the municipality, effectively manages more than 1300 restricted ownership and rental units in Whistler. This helps ensure access to affordable accommodation for many workers in the community.
Sponsored by the Housing Affordability Partnership and the Victoria Real Estate Board as an event for HOUSING AFFORDABILITY WEEK, the breakfast (7:30am –9:00am) is open to the public.
