Having a Neighbourhood Vision
A starting point for Sustainability and Affordability

Friday May 25 and Saturday May 26th, 2007


The 'Having a Neighbourhood Vision Conference' A starting point for Sustainability and Affordability is hosted by the Housing Affordability Partnership, in collaboration with the Victoria Real Estate Board, Vancity Savings, and the British Columbia Real Estate Association. This conference will bring together representatives from all sectors of the housing industry, including Neighbourhood Associations, Developers and Planners, to discuss innovative solutions and raise awareness of the complex issues related to Housing Affordability in the Capital Region.

The Having a Neighbourhood Vision Conference will take place on May 25 & 26, 2007 and will consist a public presentation by Jim Diers on the evening of Friday May 25th along with workshops and interactive discussions throughout the day on Saturday May 26th. The Jim Diers presentation on Friday evening will be on "Sustainability & Affordability – the Challenge for Cities and Neighbourhoods" and will be open to both conference participants and to the general public at no cost. Seating is limited, so if you are not a conference participant, please use the Conference Registration form to reserve a seat for the Jim Diers presentation. The Jim Diers presentation will be held in the Esquimalt Community Theatre, 847 Colville Road.

The conference events on Saturday May 26th for conference participants will include further presentations and discussions with Jim Diers, a presentation and discussion with Janice Melnychuk, Edmonton City Councillor as well as panel discussions and presentations by local community agencies and planners.

We are hoping that this conference will stimulate the development of innovative approaches and increased discussions between everyone impacted by the challenges of housing sustainability and affordability in the Capital Region.

Jim Diers
Janice Melnychuk

Jim Diers has a passion for participatory democracy. Since moving to Seattle in 1976, he put that passion to work for an Alinsky-style community organization, a community development corporation, a community foundation, and Group Health Cooperative. He was appointed the first director of Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods in 1988 where he served under three mayors over the next 14 years. Currently, Jim works for the University of Washington where he teaches courses in community organizing and development and connects university resources with community initiatives. As a member of the faculty for the Asset-Based Community Development Institute, Jim delivers speeches and conducts workshops throughout North America and beyond.

Jim received a BA and an honorary doctorate from Grinnell College. His work in the Department of Neighborhoods was recognized with an Innovations Award from the Kennedy School of Government, a Full Inclusion Award from the American Association on Mental Retardation, and the Public Employee of the Year Award from the Municipal League of King County. Jim’s book, Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle Way, is available through the University of Washington Press. More information can be found on Jim’s website: www.neighborpower.org

Janice is a lifelong Edmontonian and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Anthropology.

Janice’s varied experiences have included: President of her neighbourhood Community League; chairperson of the playground committee; treasurer of the Area Community Council; and Board member of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues.  Her volunteer experience in her children’s schools led to her election as a Public School Trustee for two terms.  In 2001 she was elected to Edmonton City Council and re-elected in 2004.

Janice's work as a City Councillor includes being the co-Chair of the Edmonton Inclusive Cities Project, part of a national five city research project.  She is also the Chair of the Inter-City Forum on Social Policy, a provincial organization of municipalities which advocates on issues of social policy.  The Council City-wide Initiatives that Janice is responsible for are the Edmonton Community Drug Strategy and Neighbourhood Revitalization, which focuses on business and community cooperation in reviving some of Edmonton's mature neighbourhoods.  She is also a Council representative on the Edmonton Police Commission.

Janice has always been interested in community and societal change which has led to classes in negotiations and a 10 year commitment to furthering the cause of community conferencing.
