How Montreal solved its housing crisis
CRD forum hears how crash program resulted in 10,000 new affordable units
In 2001, the housing vacancy rate in Montreal plummeted to 0.6 per cent. The economy had picked up. An influx of young workers started looking for rental housing.
Then on July 1, hundreds of families -- among 70,000 people who participate in a massive move on that day every year -- were stranded in the streets with nowhere to go.
"We were in a crisis situation," James McGregor recalled yesterday at the 2007 Capital Regional District Affordable Housing Forum.

Full support for housing plan: New strategy puts end to fighting, confusion
The Capital Regional District board has passed a targeted plan to deal with the region's growing crisis of homelessness and housing affordability.
The strategy, which received unanimous approval yesterday, is intended to replace a scatter-gun approach that has been plagued by in-fighting, a lack of leadership and duplicated services.

Regional Housing Affordability Strategy - ADOPTED!
This morning the Capital Regional District Board adopted the Regional Housing Affordability Strategy (RHAS) and endorsed a new delivery framework to implement this Strategy. The new delivery framework is intended to allow the CRD to act as a support and coordinating body to advance the implementation of the Strategy.
The RHAS framework provides for the development of two secretariats that will each focus on the complex issues of Housing Affordability and Homelessness within the Captial Region.

New Rent Assistance Funding for Working Families
Effective today, low-income working families across B.C. will benefit from new measures that will increase the amount of assistance provided under the Rental Assistance Program.
As announced in Balanced Budget 2007, the maximum income level to qualify for assistance is rising from $20,000 to $28,000, and the amount of assistance each household receives is also increasing, resulting in greater assistance for current recipients.
